Descendants is that very rare movie that succeeds on so many levels, it slightly defies the ability to place it into a genre, category, or even fully describe its impact. It is a low budget film that has elements of horror, alien abduction, and drama. However, all of that is dressing for a powerful emotional journey that men everywhere won’t dare admit we experience. Often, today, movies that explore masculinity and the incredible burden that men often feel miss the true pressure, turmoil, fear, and loneliness that is experienced. Yet, in this film, is an example of a single representation that is unique but so sophisticated and on point that I could not look away. The burden and fears that many men must and are encouraged to bury and repress even by those that constantly tell us to be open and honest are monsters that constantly rip parts of our souls away. The loneliness for not being able to share and just let it out is a painful experience that makes one feel like they have been violated and victimized by their own soul. This movie captures so much of this in a production that is heavy on talent. If you are looking for a horror movie and macho bravado- this will disappoint. If instead, you want to see something that skims the surface of male loneliness, weight, and centuries of pressure but in a way that is more profound than most cinema or art… take a look.
