An Homage to Classic Slashers with Mixed Results
"X" (2022) is a stylish throwback to the slasher films of the 70s, offering a fresh take on familiar horror tropes. Directed by Ti West, the film follows a group of adult filmmakers who rent a secluded Texas farm to shoot a movie, only to find themselves in a deadly situation as the elderly owners take a sinister interest in their activities.
One of the film's strengths is its commitment to capturing the gritty, retro feel of classic horror. The cinematography, with its grainy texture and muted tones, immediately transports viewers to the late 70s, and the use of music heightens the tension. The performances, especially from Mia Goth and Jenna Ortega, help ground the film in something more than just blood and gore, giving the characters a bit more depth than the usual slasher fare.
Where "X" excels is in building suspense. It takes its time setting the stage, slowly ramping up the sense of dread. However, this slow-burn approach is both a strength and a weakness. While it helps create a creepy atmosphere, the first half feels somewhat dragged out, leaving viewers waiting for the real horror to begin. Once the violence does erupt, it's intense and often shocking, but it relies a little too much on familiar slasher conventions.
Thematically, "X" touches on interesting ideas about aging, sexuality, and exploitation, but these threads aren't fully explored. They add a layer of complexity to the film, but by the end, they feel underdeveloped, leaving some of the more thought-provoking elements overshadowed by the brutality.
Overall, "X" is an enjoyable, well-crafted horror movie that nails its aesthetic and provides some solid scares, but it doesn't quite deliver the depth or innovation it hints at. Fans of the genre will likely appreciate its nostalgic appeal and suspenseful moments, but it may leave others with mixed feelings.
7/10. A tense and visually striking slasher that's entertaining, but not without its flaws.
