As children in the loving Ekdahl family, Fanny and Alexander enjoy a happy life with their parents, who run a theater company. After their father dies unexpectedly, however, the siblings end up in a joyless home when their mother, Emilie, marries a stern bishop. The bleak situation gradually grows worse as the bishop becomes more controlling, but dedicated relatives make a valiant attempt to aid Emilie, Fanny and Alexander.

How a project of this size and vision comes together with such clarity still blows my mind.
Every scene is dripping with detail that you know has been painstakingly crafted but hangs there like it's been waiting to be filmed for a century. The acting is some of the most natural I've seen and the story is a slow turning of a screw with a couple of hammer blows thrown in from the invisible man.
The version I saw was three hours long and every second felt worthwhile. Recommended.
