A minor disagreement between neighbors in Florida takes a lethal turn, with police body camera footage and interviews probing the aftermath of the state's controversial "stand your ground" laws.
What makes The Perfect Neighbor so gripping is its unwavering commitment to its format. There are no dramatic reenactments, no talking-head interviews, no omniscient narrator guiding the audience. It is, instead, a stark and unfiltered look at how an entitled misuse of authority can create a slow-moving disaster. The woman at the center of it all—who remains largely offscreen save for occasional glimpses in the officers’ cameras—is the type of figure we’ve come to recognize too often in viral news clips: someone who wields law enforcement like a weapon, escalating mundane interactions into dangerous situations, all under the guise of being a “concerned citizen.” When the film started, I thought I knew how this would play out falling into some of the ACAB genre of police body cam footage films. But that’s really not the case here. Really want to encourage to people to check this out.
