The amount of exposition just shows how stupid they thought the audience would be. The greatness of Japanese story telling is the lack of knowledge in the early stages of a story that require the audience to pay attention and invest in the narrative. All of the changes in this film are pandering to dimwitted audiences. If you've felt the peaceful intelligence of the anime, this film feels like being beaten with a sack of oranges.
