A crew of oceanic researchers working for a deep sea drilling company try to get to safety after a mysterious earthquake devastates their deepwater research and drilling facility located at the bottom of the Mariana Trench.
“In the deep, no one can hear you panic.” Underwater is a tight, claustrophobic thrill ride — a sci-fi horror that wastes no time and grabs your nerves from the first minute. Set miles below the ocean’s surface, it plunges you straight into darkness, dread, and something far worse than pressure. Kristen Stewart delivers a strong, grounded performance as a reluctant survivor, surrounded by solid supporting cast and metal creaking from all sides. The tension is constant, the corridors are narrow, the suits are heavy — and so is the silence before the next jolt. It borrows from the best (Alien, The Abyss), but makes the deep-sea terror its own. The cinematography is murky and immersive, the pacing relentless, and the horror? Slow, suffocating, and eventually Lovecraftian. It may have flown under the radar, but Underwater is a hidden gem for fans of smart, stylish creature horror. Deep, dark, and absolutely worth the dive.
