This was my first Final Destination movie. I never really had any interest in this franchise due to a perception of it just being a lot of inevitable gruesome deaths without much else. The positive reviews for this movie made me give it a chance. I was surprised by the amount of humor in the movie, with plenty of unexpected laughs that helped the movie feel self-aware without undercutting the tension. That was the other surprise. Even though there does seem to be a current of inevitability running through the movie, trying to decipher which object will trigger this Rube Goldberg machine of death was engaging and entertaining. The set pieces vary in effectiveness, but there are some pretty good ones, especially the opening sequence. Even when the movie isn't splattering gore everywhere, it does a good job building upon just the threat of things going wrong. I didn't even realize how effective it was until the movie ended. Part of that is good camerawork and the score. Yes, the characters, overarching plot, and ending all feel very simple, but it's still a good time in the theaters. I just have no reference point in terms of how it compares to other movies in the franchise.
