I really enjoyed this. Zoe Saldaña really impressed. Loved the musical numbers, the choreography, cinematography, really everything about the aesthetic. A music number at a gala where Saldaña is dancing on a tabletop and the patrons are frozen in place, (until they’re not), was really visually striking. Another number has a group of cartel gunmen locking and loading their rifles to the syncopated rhythm of the music. Cool stuff. I was enthralled from start to finish. It’s over-the-top and way out there with heavy melodrama mixed in with this musical crime drama. For me, it really worked though. The musical numbers feel like they’re putting an emphasis on those over-the-top, melodramatic elements and unsubtly reminding us that this is all for show, intentionally theatrical.
