Speak No Evil

When an American family is invited to spend the weekend at the idyllic country estate of a charming British family they befriended on vacation, what begins as a dream holiday soon warps into a snarled psychological nightmare.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo meets Straw Dogs
This movie delivers exactly what the trailer promises, it fulfills the expectations set by the premise, but nonetheless I didn't feel fulfilled or satisfied as the credits rolled.
I appreciated a lot that it's a really gradual build and slow burn, but once things start to pop off it doesn't really do anything unique or especially memorable. (Which I fully acknowledge gets harder to do with each passing year!)
I think the theme and the characters are generally well examined, but the crux of my problem with it is that the type of parents that the protagonists are shown to be simply wouldn't stay in that situation so long, regardless of the movie's attempts to explain around that.
So in the end it's not an especially exciting ride as a horror/thriller nor a real deep dive as thematic exploration. 2.5 stars feels a little harsh, but at the same time it really did hit right down the middle for me.
