From Shaw Brothers, The Lady Hermit shows how versatile the studio could be when it leaned into character driven martial arts. Already legendary from Come Drink With Me, Cheng Pei-pei stars as an aging swordswoman haunted by her past. It’s a contemplative wuxia though never dull.
The choreography is clean and deliberate, at times will make your jaw drop like an eye mutilation scene, a human pin cushion, and a beheading. The film cares as much about the characters’ inner conflicts as their physical ones. The Lady Hermit stands as a portrait of mentorship, vengeance, and redemption wrapped in classic wuxia stylings.
