A criminally-insane man is accidentally released from a mental hospital. The staff tries to cover it up, but a young psychiatrist travels to the college town where he committed several murders to warn the locals and await his arrival.
3D technology had a resurgence in the 80’s and horror at the beginning of the decade was in full slasher mode so how do you differentiate your film from all the Halloween copycats? Utilize a novelty. Around the same time at the release of Silent Madness, franchises began to employ 3D technologies on their next entry. Friday the 13th, Jaws, and Amityville Horror were taking advantage of the immersive experience. A relatively under looked standalone slasher with a budget of a mere six hundred thousand stands as one of the best Halloween imitators (and better if you ask me). As far as slashers at this level of production and budget go, Silent Madness achieves effective tension with every body count increase. One highlight I can only describe as an upside-down hanging death is one you will not forget and then the climax, which is a chase inside a labyrinth of air ducts, is the cherry on top. Any slasher hounds looking out for that next discovery- Silent Madness delivers the goods.
