It was my oldest sons birthday and he wanted to go to a movie. But we’d seen everything that was playing nearby already 😁 with the exception of this rated R Michael Bay thrill ride. And man we had a really good time. This film is weirdly progressive for a Bay film—a fairly diverse cast and I didn’t notice any blatant objectification of his gorgeous female lead. Well done. What also did was use drone shots for everything. Tracking shots, dollies, pans?? Forget it. We got a drone to capture that movement. It’s pretty wild. Some of the shots captured are definitely cool, but it definitely comes off with the feeling like Bay was just really wanting to play with his new toy.
As for the film, Gyllenhaal was perfectly unhinged. Yahya was great serving as the films moral center of sorts. The opening sequences with him and his wife setup his character really well. And Eiza Gonzalez was also very well cast and did great with this off the wall heist movie.
The plot is totally ridiculous and I don’t think it made any sense whatsoever, but our whole family had a blast at the theaters and even more fun pointing out the ridiculousness on the car ride home.
