The Beautiful Game

The Beautiful Game
Led by their coach Mal (Bill Nighy), the film follows the soccer team as they travel from London to Rome for the Homeless World Cup. At the last minute they decide to bring with them talented striker Vinny (Micheal Ward), but he must confront his own issues and once-promising past in order to help the team and move on with his own life.

The film doesn't really break new ground as it's ultimately a classic underdog story, but that doesn't make it any less effective. The themes of redemption, understanding, acceptance, and personal pride are still thoughtfully portrayed and keep you wanting to see what happens next. Micheal Ward is great, but it's really Bill Nighy who steals every scene he's in. While the plot is about sports, you definitely don't need to be a fan of sports (or have any real knowledge of football/soccer) to understand what's going on and enjoy things. Sit back, relax, and take in this heartwarming story.
