Five young New Yorkers throw their friend a going-away party the night that a monster the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city. Told from the point of view of their video camera, the film is a document of their attempt to survive the most surreal, horrifying event of their lives.
Kids loved Godzilla Minus One, so I thought maybe they would get on with this one. I was kind of surprised they didn’t like the film itself all that much. My youngest really didn’t like the found footage aspect and my oldest really didn’t like the ending. But I have to say that after talking about the thematics of Godzilla being a representation of a nuclear bomb a few weeks ago, they were interested in scouring for the theme behind the movie here and very quickly latched onto 9/11 without prompting. W for my kids. And then my daughter started looking into what King Kong represents (that’s going to be a long convo). But it’s like it’s unlocked a new dimension of film appreciation for them which is cool. Wait to they find out it’s not just kaiju that can have deeper thematic symbolism.
