A fantastic Wolfgang Petersen thriller that still holds up. As Eastwood's ageing Secret Service discovers a potentially valid assassination threat against the President, his own ghosts of being present at the Kennedy assassination (and failing in his eyes to have saved him), come back. When the man he's currently investigating (a terrific Oscar nominated John Malkovich) realises this, a cat and mouse game develops between the two men. Because it focuses on the characters, the film offers plenty of slow build tension and room for the characters to feel more dimensional than they sometimes can in films of this genre, but that also doesn't prevent director Petersen from building the story to a superbly edited and scored finale. The film shines up well on Blu-ray and it has a modest but adequate set of extras on offer. But if you're in the market for a well made thriller then you can do a lot worse than get 'In The Line of Fire'.
