Adapted from the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, this stars Robert Pattinson as an "expendable" - a disposable crew member on a space mission, selected for dangerous tasks because his body can be reprinted if he dies, with his memories largely intact. With one regeneration, though, things go very wrong.

Bong Joon Ho's Mickey 17 is a hilariously dark adaption that is at its most entertaining when leaning into the science fiction hi-jinks of its source material. However, Bong's signature style and storytelling don't feel as tight as his previous sci-fi fare, such as Snowpiercer or Okja. Robert Pattinson and Mark Ruffalo lead to great effect (man can Pattinson act or what?), with impressive support from both Toni Collette and Naomi Ackie. While I have been looking forward to Mickey 17 for a long time, I can see why WB ultimately dumped this one to a spring release. Extreme liberties were taken with the material, as I'd expect from Bong, which will work better for some than others. Ultimately, I felt that Mickey 17 was more interested in satirizing political, social and religious topics at every opportunity - leading to an unfocused plot and undermining the sincerity of Mickey's life as an expendable. Certainly worth a watch for fans of Bong Joon Ho.
