In this multiverse story Deadpool is approached by a man named Paradox who intends on vaporizing his entire universe because apparently it's not supposed to go on living without the now deceased hero Wolverine. Deadpool kidnaps another version of Wolverine to replace but this only results in Paradox banishing both Deadpool and Wolverine.
Undoubtedly a really fun romp, packed with jokes and cameos that makes it an enjoyable theatrical experience. Blood and violence go pretty hard in some places which does pretty well to satiate my bloodlust. However, the film is hampered by some of its schtickiness. (Ryan Reynolds schtick, multiverse schtick and to an extent the Hugh Jackman Wolverine schtick). Action scenes and hand to hand combat are well executed and reasonably thrilling but most times have zero consequences. Deadpool and Wolverine slice and stab each other up to no end with no repercussions or ramifications. And as much as this was hyped as Deadpools entry into the MCU, this still feels very much separate from that world. The tie-ins to the MCU feel much more like spoof and parody than meaningful connection….and I’m actually not so sure that that’s a bad thing. The story here is pretty lackluster and it doesn’t truly get me excited for more MCU. Multiverse, time variance, et al, continue to be a used as a vehicle for wild cameos, fan service and nostalgia bumps, but feels like the kind of movie that will have diminished enjoyment the more times you watch it. Negatives aside, this is absolutely a fun and wild ride. Loved, loved, loved some of the cameos. The kind of movie that is a thrill to watch with that opening weekend audience. I’m likely seeing it again with my kids because they’ve been begging to see it. I’m optimistic that most of the sexual references will fly way over their heads. Those that don’t, I’ll probably have some fun questions to field after the film. 😬
