In need of funds for research, Dr. Alan Grant accepts a large sum of money to accompany Paul and Amanda Kirby on an aerial tour of the infamous Isla Sorna. It isn't long before all hell breaks loose and the stranded wayfarers must fight for survival as a host of new -- and even more deadly -- dinosaurs try to make snacks of them.
“this is how you make dinosaurs?” “no, this is how you play god.“ lacks the sense of artistry that spielberg injected into the first two films, but i think it has a lot of merit where suspense is concerned. the bird cage scene is easily the highlight of the film, and technically influenced by a sequence from the first book. the second best suspenseful scene is the barge sequence, which also kind of took inspiration from the river chase from the original novel. everything else in this film is an homage to the previous films in some way or another, either through set pieces like a vehicle stuck in a tree or a lucky pack or throwaway lines. this truly spelled the beginning of hollywood’s incessant releases of reboots and self referential legacy sequel slop and those aspects of the film really bring the experience down. i watched it so much as a kid though and can quote it nearly line by line so i still enjoy it and it has a special place in my heart, but it’s simply nowhere near the same league as what spielberg made. biggest positives are the puppets and animatronics, and obviously sam neill and laura dern. love them both down.
