The filmmakers embarked on a task at the film's onset: to paint Shirley McLean's character as a despicable person. However, their efforts to portray her as an insufferable and narcissistic individual who made everyone's lives miserable with her mere presence proved to be a formidable challenge for the audience to overcome. As the film progressed and we were given a deeper insight into her life, she slowly transformed into a nuanced, multidimensional character, eliciting empathy.
