Sinners

Sinners
"Danser du med djævelen, vil han en dag følge med dig hjem." Gyser-thrilleren ’Sinners’ udspiller sig under raceurolighederne i det sydlige USA i 1930'erne. I et forsøg på at forlade deres urolige liv, vender tvillingebrødrene Elijah og Elias Smoke (spillet af Michael B. Jordan) tilbage til deres hjemby for at starte forfra, blot for at opdage, at en endnu større ondskab venter på at byde dem velkommen tilbage.
This is exactly what movie fans having been waiting for
and exactly what Hollywood should be making for them
I saw Sinners so here's the good
And the one tiny flaw that was probably intentional anyway
Look, I’m not going to be the first or last person to tell you this movie is amazing
This movie is amazing. There simply aren’t enough superlatives to throw at it
It is the best movie of the year so far and I don’t think there’s a close second
With Sinners, Writer director Ryan Coogler has created a powerful, provocative, promiscuous and profound vampire sand music horror film for the ages
That’s not only a bloody riot that’s about as entertaining as movies can get
But it’s also deeply emotional, richly detailed, and socially awake
The closest comparison is Get Out
Coogler is examining and probing real societal issues around race and cultural appropriation
Specifically how the blues were co-opted by mainstream American culture
But he’s doing all that through a wickedly engaging genre package.
That is also an excellent and surprising vampire movie
We don’t get smart and challenging blockbusters too often, but the world would be a better place if we did
OK what about the writing, filmmaking, and acting? All top notch
Coogler’s script follows a familiar structure, but he takes his time building the world and fleshing out the characters - before he unleashes hell
Some may find that slow build well, slow, but to me it made the overall experience so much richer
Then down the line, every department brought their A game
There are sweeping oners and beautiful magic hour photography
The production design and costumes are specific and lived in
Ludwig Goransson’s music, plus all of the songs, were effective and transporting
There’s one musical number specifically that is bound to become iconic
And from top to bottom the cast is outstanding - but I’ll give special shoutouts to Michael B Jordan in two roles, Delroy Lindo, Li Jun Li
And of course newcomer Miles Caton - this is his first movie and he is a revelation
My one tiny nitpick is that I found one big action scene to be too chaotic - to the point where I couldn’t follow what was happening to whom
It’s possible Coogler wanted to disorient the audience in that moment though, so I’ll take it in stride
The highest praise I can give this movie is my sunglasses fell out of my pocket at some point during the film
And I was so engrossed in the movie I didn’t even notice they were gone until I was halfway to my car
Anyway, if you love bold original and entertaining filmmaking, led by auteurs who actually have something to say
Go see this Sinners in theaters, if only to tell Hollywood - hey we want more stuff like this
