After an accident on a winding road, four teens make the fatal mistake of dumping their victim's body into the sea. But exactly one year later, the dead man returns from his watery grave and he's looking for more than an apology.
“i understand your pain.” i love how it’s shot, with moody and atmospheric lighting during the nighttime scenes and sweeping shots across the coastline and continuous shots from outside the second floor of a house down to the first floor and to a car. there’s so much intentionality behind the camera and i really wasn’t expecting this caliber of artistry from this picture. the concept of lost innocence - of friendships deteriorating through distance and trauma - is haunting in its own right and horror is the perfect medium through which an artist can explore it, but i walked away from this feeling like i watched a standard slasher. the characters aside from julie are one note (but i do still adore sarah michelle gellar’s portrayal of helen), and the actual mystique behind the masked killer and the twists that ensue from it feel underwhelming. this is an adequate at best screenplay that’s carried by the cinematography and performances. on the plus side, this cast is so hot i just might kms. also, i can now see where spongebob squarepants got its inspiration for the hash slinging slasher.
