Snow capped folk horror from Finland. In the arctic hellscape of Lapland a tale that begins as a desperate love story turns into horror.
The White Reindeer is visually stunning, with its stark black-and-white cinematography capturing the desolate Arctic wilderness. The use of the vast, frozen landscapes creates an otherworldly quality that mirrors the film's folkloric roots. Mirjami Kuosmanen delivers a mesmerizing performance, portraying both her vulnerability and her other witch menace possession with quiet intensity.
A mere seventy minutes, the film packs a surprising depth, with themes of love, alienation, and the destructive nature of unchecked desire. As an early entry in the folk horror genre, The White Reindeer is incredible merging cultural folklore with psychological depth.
