After she misses her train, a young woman is forced to hitch a ride back to town. After managing to get away from a lecherous trucker, she is given a ride by a good-looking but somewhat mysterious young man, who she comes to suspect may be a dangerous escapee from a mental asylum.
After checking out Twisted Nerve yesterday, I became very curious about this era of Hayley Mills filmography. Here she stars in another british thriller. Belle Adam’s, a lovely twenty-something has missed her train and is desperate to catch a ride out of town. But when a trucker attempts to sexually assault her during her ride share, she finds a fast friend in Stephen Slade (Simon Ward) to assist her on her journey. Take caution though, because there appears to be an escaped mental patient on the loose nearby. This was a pretty fun little thriller. Mills is as charming as always, but this is definitely a much darker project than I’ve ever seen her in. Along with the aforementioned attempted sexual assault, she hitches a ride with a much older man that comes on VERY strong, even proposing marriage. She also experiences several flashbacks to an apparent sexual assault from a creepy uncle or other relative. And even the chivalry of Stephen Slade himself isn’t without a little peeping tom. Slade takes opportunities to peer at Belle in various states of undress, be it lingerie clad or completely topless. Was not expecting to see Hayley Mills bare it 👀all at any point on screen. Fascinating to see her trying shake somewhat her Pollyanna image. At the same time the film is very much is attempting to use that image as a smoke screen of sorts. The ending mystery reveal was rather predictable to me, but I wonder how well this would have been received in its time. It’s a pretty well executed little thriller.
