Superman

Superman
Superman must reconcile his alien Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as reporter Clark Kent. As the embodiment of truth, justice and the human way he soon finds himself in a world that views these as old-fashioned.

I had fun watching this movie but it was just decent. I had higher expectations considering it’s the start of a new universe, movie should’ve been a 9 at least, but I think it sits between 7 and 8. I’m glad the movie didn’t do another origin story, but it still needed to do a better job with some of the intros. The groundwork to establish each character wasn’t laid strongly enough to make me feel emotionally connected to them. Now I completely dig the new Superman, David Corenswet did such a great job. His charisma, optimism and relentless is so refreshing to watch. The CGI was absolutely amazing, there’s some shots that will go down as some of the best Superman visuals ever made. The soundtrack was also great, rousing our hearts with hope. Luther on the other hand was too over the top for me. Nicholas Hoult totally pulls off the evil narcissism and megalomania, but it veers into comical territory which makes him an uninteresting villain. SPOILERS AHEAD. Mr Terrific is so badass, he definitely elevated the movie but I don’t know how to feel about the introduction to the Justice Gang. I think it takes some of the focus and heroic moments away from Superman. Guy Gardner is there purely for comedy and Hawkgirl is just there to be nonchalant and angry, which again is uninteresting. I liked the twist on Superman’s parents’ message and the inner conflict it led to. I was really interested to see how he’d navigate his image with humanity becoming skeptical of him, but they dropped that plot line in the end by just playing some news bites proclaiming “Superman is good now coz he saved us”. Some of the comedy just fell flat with certain scene transitions being a tonal mess. The cliche dumb blond ex girlfriend is the worst written character and just a plot device used in the downfall of Luther. I kind of guessed Ultraman’s true identity early on because I’ve seen the evil clone trope so many times now. The Engineer seemed interesting but we got no backstory on her and why she’s so loyal to Luther. I liked Lois Lane, the early scene where she interviewed Superman was amazing, she definitely embodies the spirit of the character that I’ve seen in the animated series/movies. I do wish we got a bit more background on their relationship together. I feel like we needed a story grounded on Earth with more world building for this new universe, but we already got a cosmic pocket dimension with Aliens popping up in cities and it all seems normal to the citizens. This movie has way too many flaws, I don’t think it was a strong start. I feel like the reason it’s getting praised and rated so highly is because people are desperate for DC to succeed and begin their reboot on a high note, we’re all starving for a new universe besides Marvel. While the movie itself is alright, the fact that Gunn completely nailed the new version of Superman, like a perfect 10/10 imo, he along with Mr Terrific and to some extent Lois carried the rest of this film on their backs, and I’m excited to see what’s next. Also loved seeing the Israel Palestine parallels and right wing losers crying over the politics in this film. I hope James Gunn reigns in some of his comedic inclinations and tropey side characters to let the inherent sincerity in the main characters shine through in the next films, we don’t need to emulate Marvel anymore in tone.
