“The Shadow of the Eagle” is an early 12-chapter serial starring John Wayne as a stunt pilot caught up in a web of espionage, aviation stunts, and industrial sabotage. At the center of the mystery is a shadowy figure known only as “The Eagle.” The plot is more concerned with delivering cliffhangers through a formulaic mix of red herrings, secret plans, and mistaken identities. It’s a product of its time, made for Depression-era audiences with thrills, not depth.
