The Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These
In humanity's distant future, two interstellar states-the monarchic Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance-are embroiled in a never-ending war. The story focuses on the exploits of rivals Reinhard von Müsel and Yang Wen Li as they rise to power and fame in the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance.

I’m usually not into military space dramas or mecha, and anime isn’t always my first pick. But I picked this one up randomly, and wow—I’m hooked.
On the surface, it’s two factions clashing in an interstellar war: the monarchic Galactic Empire vs. the democratic Free Planets Alliance. But it’s more than just ships firing lasers. The series dives deep into tactics and strategy, and somehow makes it easy to follow while still feeling smart and layered. The science feels grounded, and the battles are tense in the best way.
What really impressed me is how human the story feels. I find myself rooting for one side, but the other isn’t portrayed as evil—they’re just as complex, flawed, and sympathetic. The two commanders leading each faction are brilliant, brave, and scarred by trauma. They respect their soldiers and outwit each other in ways that make you admire them both. It’s not a simple good vs. evil; it’s shades of gray, and that makes it fascinating.
Even if you’re not into space operas, I’d recommend giving this one a shot. It’s an unexpectedly compelling ride.
