"GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY LOBBY BOY!"
OK, ummm…
I think I have another addition to add to my already weird journey with this movie
So I have seen this movie a couple times, now
in fact, it maybe my most rewatched film in Andersons filmography
but that's not because my relationship with this movie was simple
cuz I have had the oddest relationship with this movie
like I mean, the oddest
like, for one, I used to hate this movie
like this was easily my least favorite Wes Anderson movie for a while
but I couldn’t pinpoint as to why
it just didn't vibe with me on the first 2 viewings
but then, around the time I started logging the films I saw on here, I gave it another chance
& it instantly became one of my favorite films of Anderson's entire filmography
but I just revisited it, in celebration of Anderson's new movie
& I think I can now pinpoint why I didn't like this movie initially
because that's the reason why I do not like it as much as when I watched it back in like April of 2023, kinda reappeared again on this viewing
First off, let's start with the good
which there is still a shit ton of good in this movie
for one, Ralph Fiennes
he is just perfect in this movie
& I don't think it's controversial to say that he is easily one of Wes Anderson's best characters
& technically, probably is his best character
& if it wasn’t for just my personal love for Rushmore
he probably be mine as well
Ralph Fiennes was just so perfect as this near perfect character
but another person's movie I really adored was Adrian Brody
his character is so goofy
like you have the scene where Adrian is just insulting the fuck out of Ralph Fiennes
& call him the F-slur, But also says he fucks old ladys
like his characters is just so over the top
& I just can't help but love him
same goes for the rest of the ensemble
they're all very absurd, but such a great way
& yet, my favorite chunk of the movie, I'll say, isn't even really the main story
cuz I really loved the parts with Jude Law & F Murray Abraham
cuz that section of the movie had the stuff I just love the most in Wes Andersons movies
which I'll get more into that later
& then, I can't mention this movie without mentioning how this movie looks
for one, it’s shot so fuckin’ well, like every Wes Anderson movie
& the fuckin’ set design, man
it's all just out of this fuckin’ world
but yeah, there is just so much greatness about this movie
whether it be the outstanding ensemble, the incredible set, or even just a chunk of the movie
there is just so much in this movie to appreciate
Now it's time to talk about the bad
because, as I mentioned
I think I figured out why this movie didn't click with me initially
& that is just how absurd the whole movie is
like yeah, it is definitely a lot of charm of the movie
& I have come to really appreciate it, over time
but personally, I kind of like the more down-to-earth stories Anderson does
hell, my favorite film of his is probably his most down-to-earth movie ever
& the same thing goes for my 2nd favorite Anderson movie
like I just think he thrives better in the realistic tealm
now, again, there are some aspects of the goofiness I very much enjoyed
some of the dialogue is really funny
like, again, the scene where Adrien Brody is just insulting the fuck out of Ralph Fiennes is probably the funniest scene in any of Anderson's movies
& also, Ralph Fiennes was at the perfect level of over-the-top in this movie
really, my only problem is that every character is over-the-top, & goofy
& so when you have that plus Anderson's unique style
I will say, it does get a bit draining after a little bit
but I mean, it is still a very solid aspect of the movie
it's just, I can understand someone not like Connecting with the movie because of that
because I'm pretty sure that's why I didn't like it initially
Anyways, those are just my thoughts.
I know some of you out there absolutely adore this movie
particularly 2 people I know on here, who has this as their favorite movie ever
& so for a lot of people, what I'm saying is probably blasphemy
but I just have to be truthful
& still, I feel this is still a very strong 9/10
I just personally connect to different aspects of Anderson's movies
Overall Alfred gets bitches
