“High Road” to China is a romantic adventure that centers on the familiar trope of two stubborn personalities forced to rely on each other. While it aims for sparks, the romance never quite lands. The pacing drags in places, and the film treats the lead’s alcoholism more as a quirk than a concern. It has charm in parts, but the emotional connection feels unearned.
