Definitely one of those films that I would not have watched if not for it’s Oscar nomination. It’s a bit twee, but it’s cute and watchable for more than just the costume designs. Lelsey Manville is endearing has Ada Harris, the cleaning lady who dreams of buying a Christian Dior dress. She sets off to Paris to make that dream come true, but bumps up against the exclusionist haute couture culture. Sometimes stretches believability, but in service of saccharine and sappy story. Somehow, this film managed to get me to hate a character played by Isabbelle Huppert, which I didn’t think was physically possible. Enjoyable watch.
