Despite sounding like a goofy creature feature, though to most it probably is- you won’t find any giant killer blue monkeys here. Also known as Insect! since the creature is basically a giant praying mantis. It’s a tense, claustrophobic monster movie using elements of Alien in a hospital-based horror. Blue Monkey plays both part monster movie part infection terror. The confined hospital setting, combined with the looming threat of infection, adds an extra layer of tension.
The grotesque, insectoid terror grows more menacing with each appearance, stalking the hospital's narrow hallways and while the moments are limited the few scenes of bloodshed are very effective. Particularly a scene with the giant insect lopping off heads with its pincers. Blue Monkey is an 80’s take on the classic 50’s sci-fi giant bug movies.
Blue Monkey may have been overlooked in its time, director William Fruet too, but it’s the perfect example of why revisiting lesser-known horror films can be so rewarding. This slimy, sci-fi thriller is a reminder of the unique creativity that the 80’s horror scene had to offer.
