Ippolita is a paralyzed young woman with serious mental problems stemming from the death of her mother. Her crisis of faith and the intervention of a well-meaning psychologist lead Ippolita to remember her past life as a witch during the Inquisition. Eventually, Ippolita becomes possessed and starts seducing local men, only to kill them. An exorcism seems to be the only solution to stop the madness.
Italy takes on The Exorcist and the demonic possession trend of the 70's. Less of a knockoff, The Antichrist is more an operatic, hyper-stylized spin on the subgenre. The film leans into lurid excess with all the grandeur and hysteria you’d expect from Italian genre cinema of the era. Plunging into wild territory of blasphemous imagery, dreamlike flashbacks, occult rituals, and unsettling possession scenes. It's not subtle, but it is memorable. Not as cohesive as The Exorcist, but comparatively unhinged and far more visually rich, The Antichrist is one of the better exorcism acts during the trend.
