In a year filled with excellent horror movies...In a Violent Nature bucks the trend. Initial reviews were fairly positive, so I was looking forward to this movie. Don't get me wrong, there are some cool shots here and there, and a few of the kills felt innovative. That's really where my praise ends though. The gimmick of following the movie from the serial killer's perspective doesn't add much. There's a reason most movies do not do it. So much of the movie is following this guy walking around which is just not interesting in the slightest. It prevents the movie from developing any interesting characters from the pool of victims -- they are literally just given a handful of lines, effectively being cardboard cutouts. More glaringly, the movie doesn't bother trying to make the villain (and the only real character in the movie) interesting. He does not speak and gets a very stereotypical origin story. Basically, this movie isn't actually engaging from a plot or character perspective in the slightest. Maybe if you were trapped in a theater, you'd be forced to watch it, but I was constantly looking to pause the movie. Fancy kills can't make the movie, and to be honest, only 1 or 2 of them even qualify for that. The director basically decided that the gimmick would be enough to make up for all the things the movie lacks, and while I appreciate some of the nicer looking shots, there are plenty of horror movies this year that marry the strong visuals/imagery/cinematography with intriguing plots and characters and themes. Let's call this what it is, an attempt to be an artsy version of Terrifier and nothing else.
