Taking the well-worn “war in Heaven” concept and twisting it into a noir-ish road movie. The Prophecy hits with the atmosphere- with desert landscapes, dimly lit churches, and ancient inhuman forces lurking about. Some sickening violent sequences and imagery make the film sweeter. Christopher Walken as a pissed off bloody hungry angel. Viggo Mortensen shows up late in the game as Lucifer.
The Prophecy works because it’s part horror, part fantasy, part detective story, and all carried by a killer cast who play it dead straight.
