A non-judgmental analysis of the driving forces of human behavior when confronted with the unknown, of the way we perceive the other and on how we relate to an unsettling future.
I only recently saw Cristian Mungiu’s 4 Months, 3 weeks, 2 days, but I really loved what he accomplished with that film. Set in Romania, utilizing several long takes, 4M3W2D tells a moving story that also highlights an important social issue.  In some ways, R.M.N. Is very similar Set in small village in Transylvania Tackles, a local bakery has hired 3 Sri Lankan workers and this ripple causes a xenophobic wave to wash over the small village.  The members of the catholic church urge the reverend to talk to the bakery owners to kick the workers out.  Townspeople begin refusing to buy bread knowing that it was made with the hands of these Sri Lankans and it all culminates in this town hall where the town air their collective grievances in a 17 minute long take that is pretty incredibly realized. Along with the towns irrational fears of these outsiders, a bevy of other socioeconomic issues are raised as well.  I want to mention (mild spoiler, I suppose), but there’s a plot thread that runs throughout the film regarding animals going missing, people seen hanging in the woods, and other strange happenings around the town. Because it’s set in Transylvania, I was 1000% convinced the final reveal would be a vampire movie. I’m not sure if that was intentional, but that expectation somewhat colored my view of this film. I think it’s best if you know up front that that is not where this film is headed. Worth checking out, though.
