At age 101, Rose DeWitt Bukater recounts her experiences on the Titanic, which took its maiden and final journey 84 years prior. Alongside her mother and betrothed, a youthful Rose embarked on the voyage. At the same time, Jack Dawson and Fabrizio De Rossi secured tickets for the ship's third class. She narrates the events from the moment the Titanic set sail until its sinking on April 15, 1912.
I just watched Titanic again and I give it 4 out of 5 stars. There is a reason this movie is one of the most iconic films of all time. It is huge, dramatic, emotional, and visually stunning. Even after all these years it still knows how to pull you in and keep you hooked from start to finish. The story is set around the real life sinking of the RMS Titanic but what makes this version different is that it tells the story through the eyes of two fictional characters. Jack and Rose are from completely different worlds and meet on the ship during its first and only voyage. Their love story is at the heart of the movie and gives the audience something personal to hold on to during all the chaos. Leonardo DiCaprio is great as Jack Dawson. He brings so much charm, energy, and heart to the character. He makes Jack feel like a real person with a big heart and big dreams. You can tell why Rose would be drawn to him. Kate Winslet as Rose is also amazing. She plays a young woman trapped in a life she does not want and you really feel for her. Together they have great chemistry and you believe in their connection the whole time. The set design and effects are seriously impressive. The ship looks incredible both inside and out and you can tell a lot of work went into making everything feel authentic. When things start to go wrong later in the movie the scale of the disaster is shown in a way that still feels intense today. The music is also iconic. James Horner’s score fits perfectly with every emotional moment and adds so much to the story. Of course the main song is unforgettable and has become a huge part of pop culture. Even if you are not into romance movies that music will hit you. The pacing is slow at the beginning but I think it works for the story. It gives you time to connect with the characters and really feel like you are on the ship with them. By the time the second half starts everything kicks into high gear and it becomes a completely different kind of movie. The reason I give it 4 out of 5 instead of a full 5 is not because it is bad at all. It is just that some of the dialogue can feel a little too dramatic and the movie is very long. There are a few scenes that could have been trimmed down. But that is a small complaint in a movie that mostly does everything right. What stands out about Titanic is how well it blends romance and disaster. You care about the love story but you are also on edge as the ship starts to sink. The movie never forgets the real tragedy behind the story and handles it with a lot of respect. Overall Titanic is a huge emotional movie that delivers on every level. It has romance, action, history, and unforgettable performances. Even if you are not into long romantic dramas, this one is worth seeing just for how well it is made. I enjoyed it a lot and I totally get why it is still talked about today.
