Er hatte die junge Frau zuletzt lebend gesehen. Nach seiner Aussage hatte sie das Haus alleine verlassen und war dann einfach verschwunden. Die an der Leiche gesicherten Spermaspuren entlasten den Verdächtigen. Ein halbes Jahr später taucht ein Ring des Opfers in einem Pfandleihhaus auf. Die Polizei findet heraus, dass der Ring im Haus von Raymond Williams gefunden worden war. Doch der Mann streitet alle Vorwürfe ab und weigert sich, eine DNA-Probe abzugeben. Da es keine weiteren Beweise gibt, können die Polizisten ihn nicht weiter verfolgen. 15 Jahre später, im November 2004, wird der Mordfall nochmals untersucht. In der Polizei-Datenbank ist ein genetisches Profil gespeichert, dass mit den Spermaspuren aus dem Mordfall übereinstimmt – es handelt sich um das Profil von Willams. Der Mann verschafft sich mit Gewalt Zutritt und sperrt das Kind mit seinen Geschwistern ins Badezimmer. 15 Minuten später kann sich der Junge befreien und findet seine tote Mutter: Shirley Vian wurde erdrosselt. Die Polizei erinnert das Verbrechen an den Mord an der Familie Otero im Jahr 1974. Damals waren die Eheleute Otero sowie ihr neunjähriger Sohn Joseph ermordet worden. Schnell ist sich die Polizei sicher, dass hier ein Serientäter zugeschlagen hat. In Briefen an die Polizei rühmt sich der Täter seiner Verbrechen. Sieben weitere Menschen will der Mann, der sich BTK nennt, ermordet haben. Doch dann hört das Morden vorerst auf. 25 Jahre später kehrt der Unbekannte in die Öffentlichkeit zurück, mordet wieder und gesteht weitere Verbrechen. Er beweist seine Schuld mit Fotos vom Tatort, die nur der Mörder aufgenommen haben kann. Doch als er dann über eine Computer-Diskette weitere Informationen an die Polizei schickt, scheint er in eine Falle der Ermittler gegangen zu sein. - Ein Tropfen Blut

Ein Fenster ist zerstört, am Vorhang ist ein Blutfleck. Doch alle Ermittlungsbemühungen bleiben erfolglos. Erst Jahre später lassen die Polizisten das DNA-Profil der Blutprobe durch die Datenbank laufen und stoßen auf Donald Houser Jr., der gerade wegen Einbruchs im Gefängnis sitzt. In der Vergangenheit hat er mit seiner Freundin Angela einige Einbrüche begangen. Die Komplizin gesteht im Polizeiverhör, dass sie den Mord an der alten Dame beobachtet hat. Die Fortschritte bei den DNA-Untersuchungen verschaffen den Polizisten neue Erkenntnisse: Ein unbekanntes DNA-Profil kann sichergestellt werden.
