🏀 West Philadelphia born and raised, Hallmark Channel by the finale. A great re-imagining that started with grit but ended in glitter ✨ For a show that started out strong, edgy and gritty, Bel-Air ended on a surprisingly soft note, leaning into the kind of corny '90s TV magic where everyone winds up exactly where they wanted to be instead of where the story naturally should have taken them. That's not to say I disagreed with every creative decision in this re-imagining. The series deserves genuine praise for its writing, acting, directing and willingness to tackle political and social issues, even if some of its perspectives felt dated or heavy-handed at times. The first three seasons struck an effective balance between grounded drama, emotional tension and believable character development. Then season four arrived and, ironically, became more like its 1990s sitcom counterpart than the darker, more realistic drama it had spent three years establishing. The original Fresh Prince managed to balance comedy, drama and realism far better than what Bel-Air delivered in its final season. Instead, season four became an overly sentimental, happily-ever-after finale where nearly everyone got exactly what they wanted. It was so wrapped up in feel-good resolutions that I found myself counting down the minutes through the final four episodes. Rather than letting the characters earn their endings through meaningful consequences, the series seemed determined to hand out happy endings across the board. Had the final season maintained the quality of the first three, I genuinely believe Bel-Air could have surpassed the original in several respects. Instead, its final season became its undoing. To be fair, the show was put in a difficult position. Cutting the final season to just eight episodes after giving the first three seasons ten each was practically larceny. That's a significant amount of storytelling to lose, and it's clear the writers had to rush through plotlines that deserved far more room to breathe. Despite my disappointment with the ending, I'd still recommend Bel-Air to anyone looking for a modern, dramatic reinterpretation of a beloved '90s sitcom. The journey is absolutely worth taking. It's just unfortunate that the destination doesn't live up to everything that came before it. For me, it's a one-and-done watch. The first three seasons showed just how great this series could be. The fourth reminded me how quickly even the strongest shows can lose sight of what made them special.
