- Other than Dark, this may be Netflix's best show. The characters are fascinating and challenging. The story is exactly as history tells us about times during the Weimar Republic. Berlin was absolutely hopping, and some of the best set pieces in the show are at the club that is present to much of the story. These musical numbers were incredibly lush and lavish and the showmanship is outstanding. Finally, the recreation of pre-war Alexanderplatz is incredibly well done. The people who conceived of and built these sets should get some kind of award. The show is ostensibly a mystery/crime drama where the purptrators turn out to be quite nasty. Plot armor is not a thing. The spectre of the Nazi Party is everywhere, but people haven't picked up on what that means. Manipulation is everywhere and they ate already abusing their power, and it is very creepy to see how they view Hitler as messianic. I think even history buffs are going to be impressed by this show.
- TL;DR, this is the singular greatest series Netflix has ever made the mistake of syndicating. History buffs, fans of 1920s hairstyles, or even those just wanting to pick up a little German will get a lot out of this show. It's unlikely a show made in current year and taking place about a century ago would be filmed on location, but this series proves it can (and should) be done. They used location shooting whenever they could, both interiors and exteriors. They had to use stand-ins for many buildings, as the originals were leveled by bombs, but they worked exhaustively to keep everything as real as possible. The paternoster elevator, Alexanderplatz, the riverfront, they're all real places used as they were or with some light set dressing. As a former German resident, I truly believe it's one of the greatest filmmaking achievements of the past 30 years. On top of that, the narrative is greatly inspired by the history. The main characters are fictional, but the events they witness are usually not. The entire plot of the first season is based on real events which spawned a famous urban legend that still persists today. The final season depicts many real people and even outlines many of their fates after the series ends. Leave it to the Germans to keep a perfect timetable of public arson. The themes of media control and the battle between security and freedom are as relevant today as they were then. The show does a great job of exploring them without being apologetic or preachy. Grab your brown shirt, pop some antibabypillen, and pick subs not dubs. You'll absolutely love it.
