Joel Kinnaman gives a strong performance in the first season, while the mystery-driven plot provides plenty of action and suspense. However, the dense mythology, graphic violence, and complicated storytelling can sometimes make the series difficult to follow. Overall, Altered Carbon is a stylish and thought-provoking thriller, though its second season is less compelling than its excellent first season.

Set in the future, Altered Carbon follows the story of Takeshi Kovacs, an almost superhuman mercenary, as he is released from prison, essentially a slave to a very rich man. Takeshi's unique set of experiences and skills guide him through the investigation he is tasked with, revealing life altering truths from his past. Both leads, Joel Kinnaman and Anthony Mackie(Season 2) help bring the idea of an "envoy" to life.
