Coming from a team of seasoned professionals in British comedy, Jennifer Saunders' and Dawn French's writing is fabulous (no pun intended!), and when teamed with Ruby Wax, and a splendid cast including the incomparable Joanna Lumley, you have the making of an iconic series that will continue to provide laughs FOREVER!!
- This is one of those origin stories that sounds too good to be true, but every bit of it is real. Dawn French and her husband Lenny Henry had been trying to have a child for years. When pregnancy didn't happen for them, they turned to adoption — and anyone who has been through that process knows there is no timeline, no countdown, no due date. You just wait. And wait. And then one day the phone rings. Dawn French described it this way: "What you don't have when you adopt is the preparation time that a pregnant person has. You don't have nine months of thinking about this. Suddenly there's a phone call." And that phone call came at just about the most chaotic possible moment. Dawn and Jennifer Saunders had studios booked, directors booked, crew booked, and material being written for a new French and Saunders series. Everything was locked in and ready to go. Then Dawn walked in and said, "Jen, a baby has arrived." Jennifer Saunders told her to go. Just go. "Right, go, go — I'll do something." So Dawn left. She went home to meet her daughter Billie and begin the most important chapter of her life. And Jennifer Saunders was left standing in a fully booked studio with a crew, no co-star, and a blank page. What she did with that time became television history. The year before, the two of them had written a sketch together about a chaotic mother and her long-suffering daughter. It was one of the longest sketches they had ever done because they were both having so much fun with it. Jennifer looked at that sketch and decided to blow it wide open. She took the mother character, dialed everything up to eleven, and turned it into a full sitcom. Jennifer Saunders was Dawn's rock through the whole thing — covering for her, keeping it private, and using the studio time to write what would become one of the most beloved British comedies ever made. That sitcom was Absolutely Fabulous. It premiered on BBC Two in 1992 and made Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone iconic figures in comedy history. Dawn French was at home falling in love with her new baby daughter. Jennifer Saunders was at a BBC studio accidentally creating a classic. As Dawn herself put it years later: "I was at home having my dream come true — but also having to witness her being rather good on her own." A baby arrived, a best friend stepped up, and Ab Fab was born. That is the story.
