That’s the deliciously chaotic opening to A Discovery of Witches. The show blends the four-creature archetypes—witches, vampires, daemons and humans—into a tapestry that is part dark fantasy, part forbidden-love saga. Its world-building leans into the weight of history: witches hiding their nature, vampires navigating centuries of survival, daemons lurking in the shadows. Much of the series doesn’t shy from the darker themes—reform, the fear of exposure, the cost of being “monstrous” in a world that demands you pass for human. And yet—even with the gloom—it doesn’t end in despair. The show gives you a happy-ish ending, wrapping its arcs in enough solace to leave you satisfied. That mix of shadow and hope is rare. The romance between the witch and vampire at its centre keeps the emotional engine humming, while the supernatural politics and folklore keep the stakes high. Reviews have praised its “grounded flights of fancy” and the chemistry between leads.
