With characteristics of Lovecraftian cosmic horror, Cronenbergian body horror and a not too subtle dash of nihilism, the movie is bleak and gross. Too bad it is also poorly conceived. The acting is okay and the movie looks good and sells its despairing tone but is oddly flat and lacks the needed oomph to push it over the finish line. Altogether Wounds is a movie that, while not terrible, could have been so much more. A very mild recommendation.

Für Barkeeper Will (Armie Hammer) soll es eigentlich eine ruhige Schicht werden, die er sich von Stammkundin Alicia (Zazie Beetz) versüßen lässt. Doch dann fangen zwei Gäste eine Auseinadersetzung an, die ungewöhnlich blutig endet. Danach findet Will ein Handy, das offenbar von einem jungen Menschen in der Bar vergessen wurde. Zuhause bei seiner Freundin Carrie (Dakota Johnson) nimmt er das Smartphone unter die Lupe – und findet darauf neben geheimnisvollen Nachrichten über ein bestimmtes Buch, von dem man besser die Finger lässt, auch grausige Gewaltvideos. Das Handy nimmt immer mehr seiner Zeit und Aufmerksamkeit in Anspruch. Langsam scheint Wills Psyche zu kollabieren, doch auch sein Körper zeigt plötzlich mysteriöse Wunden, die er sich nicht erklären kann…
