Tusk commits wholeheartedly to one of the most bizarre premises in modern horror, and Kevin Smith deserves credit for never hesitating to embrace the film's increasingly outrageous direction. Justin Long carries much of the film's burden, though I never felt his performance fully grounded material that demanded complete audience investment. Michael Parks, on the other hand, delivers the film's strongest performance by bringing a chilling conviction to Howard Howe that briefly suggests the screenplay is building toward something greater than its premise alone. Once the initial novelty wore off, I found myself waiting for the screenplay to reveal that there was more to the concept than the concept itself. My biggest issue was that Tusk mistakes absurdity for creativity. Rather than using its bizarre premise as the foundation for something more imaginative or thought-provoking, the screenplay appears content to rely on the shock of the idea itself. Howard Howe is developed into such a commanding presence that the story ultimately struggles to justify the weight it places upon him. I can appreciate ambitious failures more than safe successes, but this is one of the rare occasions where I felt the ambition never matured into a compelling film. As one of A24's earliest releases, Tusk serves as a reminder that even the studio's remarkable reputation was built through experimentation, and not every experiment succeeds.

In certain ways this is Kevin Smiths greatest triumph as a director, because he was able to get multiple excellent performances from his actors, for the stupidest plot he could come up with. The comedy comes from how absurd the concept of the movie is, and how hard everyone tries to give it credibility. This is not close to Kevins best movie, but it might be his most impressive.

Not a happy movie. Well made, but you can never un-see it. It certainly isn't inspirational. Watch if the sad and bizzare interest you.

A banger for what it's trying to be and a fascinating directorial turn by Smith, but it was ultimately too weird, creepy, and skin-crawly for me.

It started out brilliantly, but was let down by the last act of the film.

i really wanted to like this but sadly it's the product of kevin's THC infused brain so maybe i need to be high to get why this was entertaining. the sfx was cool with the walrus and all but i just couldn't get into this. I still love kevin's comedy movies but this just wasn't made for me and that's ok.
