Everything I knew about this film were still images, parody, and the game played with death. But my assumption of what it was, and the reality of what it is were far divorced. For one, I did not expect the comedy in it, nor the tone of the film in general. Bergman explores faith very well here, and with a clear eye to humanity, the simple but exquisite joys of everyday life and the folly we make in search of meaning and place. If you haven't watched The Seventh Seal because you expect a dour and oppressive slog then rethink that. It's a film that explores the best and worst of humanity, and the struggle for meaning we all face before we perform the dance of death.

Antonius Block bittet um Aufschub und schlägt ihm eine Partie Schach vor, die die Entscheidung über sein junges Leben fällen soll. Bevor er sterben muss, möchte der Ritter noch eine bedeutende Tat vollbringen: Eine herumziehende Schauspielerfamilie, die inmitten aller Leiden ihre Lebensfreude bewahrt hat, möchte er retten.
