This movie is one of those releases that goes under the radar and never gets the accolades it deserves. This is a awesome horror flick in its own right. The prosthetic makeup is great. I still can't believe Ben Stiller is one of the producers for this film as he is known for comedy more than anything else. Overall this is a better than average attempt at a teenager horror film that is enjoyable and deserves more recognition.

The Ruins is definitely a creepy horror that tangles an intricate weave of suspense throughout. The ancient stigmatization surrounding the ruins is bold and deep, casting a dark shadow over the local Mayan culture within the village. What lies within the ruins is something dark and mysterious …so much so that the locals do not dare engage it. Plants come alive and have entrapment mechanisms to lure in those who step foot on them. The movie portrays the build up of terror very well, with the characters becoming irrational and overwhelmed, with some accidents thrown in too. You know there’s always going to be disagreements when people are trapped…oh I want to do this, no you can’t, I want to do this instead..and so on. Bickering and overall uneasiness is part of the scope of the difficulties whilst trapped on a ruin of terror. The unknown nature of the plants and their thirst for humans is really interesting. M Night is a director who had a similar theme with nature being more than unexpected in behavior. The Ruins does a really good job showing the plants entering the flesh and bringing some unsettling visuals to viewers. There is also the Alien element that is creepy. Knowing there is a foreign lifeform in the body growing or also changing the host in subtle or not so subtle ways. The plants have this alien or greater unknown story and some deeper purpose to their existence. Why or how surrounding the existence and purpose would be a very good prequel to this movie. Entertaining overall, with great acting and believable characters.
