The Rig doesn’t pretend to be high art, it’s here to deliver creature carnage, offshore isolation and a cast of roughnecks who are clearly doomed from the moment the storm hits. I caught this one with the same mindset I’d have watching Leviathan or DeepStar Six, expecting rubbery monsters, grizzled dialogue and a setting that screams “no escape.” The plot? A tropical storm traps the crew of an oil rig just as they disturb something nasty in the deep. Cue the creature! It’s got that early 2000s digital sheen, the kind of lighting that makes everything look slightly too clean for horror. But the heart’s in the right place: practical effects, tight corridors and a script that knows when to lean into genre tropes. There’s no subtlety here, just survival, splatter and stormy suspense. A creature feature that hits all the expected beats and that’s exactly why it works. If you’ve got a soft spot for isolated horror, monster suits and the kind of film that feels like it aired on RTL7 at 23:00 with Dutch subtitles and a beer in hand, The Rig delivers.

Die Arbeiter auf einer Ölplattform mitten im Ozean machen bei einer Tiefseebohrung eine ungewöhnliche Entdeckung: Als der Bohrer im Sand auf etwas Festes stößt, sieht es aus, als würde Blut aufsteigen. Die Crew hat zunächst jedoch andere Sorgen, denn ein gewaltiger Tropensturm zieht auf. Und mit ihm eine mörderische Kreatur aus den Tiefen des Meeres. Als die ersten Besatzungsmitglieder, die sich zu weit von Gruppe entfernen, auf mysteriöse Weise verschwinden, bricht Panik aus. Das Monster tötet nach dem anderen und bald geht es nur noch um das nackte Überleben. Für die verbleibende Besatzung gibt es kein Entkommen und keine Aussicht auf Hilfe vom Festland. Es bleibt nur noch die Flucht nach vorne: Sie müssen sich dem unbekannten Wesen stellen und die Bestie töten, ehe sie ihr selbst zum Opfer fallen. Allerdings befinden sich keine Waffen an Bord...
