The Nice Guys is a buddy neo-noir film that feels like it flows effortlessly even though A LOT is going on. The tone swings between slapstick, mystery, and sudden action, and it somehow holds together. Ryan Gosling continues to surprise with his range, especially his comedic timing. He plays a seemingly inept drunk who panics, yelps, and occasionally screams like a little girl when things go wrong. It's a risky choice, but it works brilliantly, overall. OK, maybe it gets a bit grating when he imitates Lou Costello, but we can forgive him for not being perfect. The humour comes from how completely he commits to incompetence without losing sympathy. The contrast with Russell Crowe is the engine of the film. Crowe plays the heavy. He's calm and practical, and the dynamic clicks immediately. This is also one of the first (and best) uses of Crowe in his later career as a fat man. Seriously, what happened in 2015? We saw him relatively trim as Noah then he came back for this movie all chubby. Was it a method thing that he never got over? Anyway, he's heavier, slower, and the film goes with it. Instead of pretending he's still a sleek action lead, it makes him a blunt instrument. He looks like a man who wins fights by not caring how much damage he takes. The weight actually helps sell the character as a tough guy who doesn't need to be flashy. The late 1970s setting is handled well. It captures a looser, less supervised world where kids are dialed in and know exactly what's going on around them. Angourie Rice is excellent as the sharp, self-possessed teenager who keeps inserting herself into danger. Margaret Qualley brings the right mix of detached rebellion and vulnerability. Together they underscore how casually exposed young people could be, and the film never overexplains it. That's just teh way things were. The action sequences are clean and a joy to watch, the mystery is well structured, and the dialogue has that dry, slightly absurd edge that suits neo-noir. It sits comfortably alongside films like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Seven Psychopaths, or the more offbeat end of the spectrum where you'll find The Big Lebowski. It's funny, gritty, and built around a genuinely entertaining detective story. The chemistry carries it, the period setting gives it flavour, and the script keeps the momentum going. It really does feel like the kind of mid-budget, character driven genre film that rarely gets made anymore. We need more movies like this.

Great movie based in the 70's and carries that decade's vibes. One warning, this movie shows a lot of violence and doesn't hide much.

Hugely underrated, Gosling and Crowe are amazing and this movie is hilarious. The plot is a bit convoluted, but worth it.

A sharp, witty screenplay with some of the best physical comedy ever put to the big screen. Ryan Gosling is truly one of the greats.

Crude but a fun ride. Felt maybe 20 min too long but very enjoyable nonetheless.

My quick rating - 7.8/10. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling team up in an unlikely crime/mystery film that just works. The characters are acted out just the way they should be, which is often rare in buddy flicks. Crowe plays the heavy while Gosling plays the heavy drinker. They get paired up when Gosling is a Private detective working a case that Crowe inadvertently gets roped into. The two, of course, have no interest in working together, which adds to the comedy. This movie is filled with underlying dark humor that sometimes misses the mark, but overall is entertaining. Also incorporating some little shout-outs to spotting the time frame (Tim Allen's name on the marquee at the Comedy Store, for example) points out the writer's/director's attention to detail. Little things such as this pop up to make you appreciate the care that was put into the film. The story itself moves along very well as the mystery of Amelia (Margaret Qualley) plays out in the porn industry. Explaining what I mean would be in spoiler territory, so watch it to see. I will say that after the majority of the film being so good, the ending just seemed to run out of gas. It didn't let the audience down; it just didn't live up to the excellent work that was already presented. But overall, a very well-made movie, and I would be open to a sequel if they so chose.
