This is the biggest surprise of 2024 for me. For an under-the-radar prequel to a large horror franchise, I was expecting a low-effort straight-to-video attempt like so many we have gotten recently, e.g. Exorcist Believer. So let me tell you that this movie is none of those things. First and foremost, the cinematography in the movie is extremely striking, with tons of excellent imagery and a confidence in the camerawork that is truly stunning. I legitimately think it is one of the best-shot horror movies I've seen recently. Multiple scenes were extremely evocative and felt straight out of the 70s and 80s with a modern twist. Nell Tiger Free is excellent as well, building off her work in The Servant and fully committing to the role, especially in the latter half of the movie. The story itself is engaging enough -- I don't particularly love this franchise and find the original story a bit bland. However, I thought this one managed to build enough suspense, even if I was able to predict the way it was going to end. I also think it managed to pull in some surface-level themes regarding religion and women's bodies, though it could have gone into more depth there. Regardless, it's a lot of fun and well worth a watch for the cinematography alone.

This film is the first Omen movie to be decent in quite a while. I may be biased against it as religious horror is kind of lame in my opinion. It's not a bad movie; just kind of basic.

Not sure why 2024 is the year of nuns giving birth to the anti-christ, but this was the best one so far. I definitely was not prepared for such a graphic depiction of a demon birth. Hopefully it doesn’t visit me in my nightmares.

The First Omen brings back the slow-burn religious horror vibe with style, anchoring its scares in mood and mystery rather than cheap jolts. The atmosphere is thick, the visuals are strong, and it plays well as a prequel without feeling like a cash-in. It does drag in places, and some of the bigger reveals don’t hit as hard as they should, but the commitment to tone and strong lead performance help carry it through. A thoughtful, well-crafted entry that doesn’t reinvent the genre, but adds something worthwhile to the Omen mythos.

The latest Omen surprised me with its scale and ambition more than any previous entry in the series. Having everything that bears the mark of The Omen still fresh in mind, this installment - the most recent one, yet chronologically the first - feels the most complete and mature. Rather than simply ticking off familiar motifs or playing on nostalgia, the film patiently builds its own dense horror intrigue, gradually revealing the disturbing scope of its story. One of its greatest strengths is the setting: the ascetic monastic space, religious austerity, bodily temptation, and diabolical rituals all merge into a highly suggestive whole. The horror emerges primarily from atmosphere, symbolism, and a sense of conspiracy and moral decay. Instead of the classic suspense associated with the original The Omen, the film leans toward a giallo-inspired aesthetic - closer to Dario Argento, with its sensual dread and expressive use of color, sound, and rhythm. This is a prequel that works not only on its own terms, but also as a solid foundation for a potential reboot.

A decent stab at recapturing what made the original so great. Shades of Argento and some genuine scares

A good prequel of and old movie, with some of the old films( The Omen) feelings.

    Boring and easy to predict

As a huge Omen fan, I was skeptical about another outing in this series, but 2024's The First Omen has definitely exceeded my expectations. Telling a story that easily fits as a prequal to the first, this film is packed with thrills and fills the viewer with an uneasy tension as they watch lead actress (Nell Tiger Free) navigate the strange events and unravel the mystery that sets in motion the rest of the franchise. There are a few scenes that are direct callouts of the original film, however they add a nice twist onto these that keep it fresh enough, while still bringing nostalgia. Overall, the only thing I'd critique is the handling of the ending. While this story does not break the mythos of the films to come after it, it does add a new thread which unless another film is made, will be left unpulled. This unfinished business is unsettling but not enough for me hate the film. With creepy visuals and an an unnerving score, this film is a great addition to the series.
