Jahrhunderts.

The powerhouse performances take center stage in this wonderfully cinematic adaptation of the theatrical production. Fantasia Barrino is awe inspiring in the leading role, but Taraji P. Henson and Danielle Brooks each take turns completely stealing scenes. The song and dance numbers are radiant, featuring the aforementioned vocal talents and bolstered by the finely crafted choreography and production. Our packed crowd applauded after almost every song. The story, which spans decades, is efficiently paced. It never drags or lulls, but never feels like we’re zipping past anything of importance either. There are a lot of characters to manage, but impressively, I don’t think any of them got short-changed. By the heart-rending conclusion, nearly every character has earned a meaningful arc, making for some immensely satisfying food for the soul. The Color Purple is a triumph.

This version of the critically acclaimed original film imbues the narrative with a hopefulness and sense of beauty that was not nearly as prevalent before. Its use of song to convey the inner emotions of the characters adds a layer of emotional depth that will make even the most stubborn viewer shed a tear or two. The added expansion on the love story between Celie and Shug takes this version a step further than its predecessor by refusing to shy away from what is, in this viewers eyes, a much needed piece of queer representation that the original was too afraid to take on. While there might be one minor flaw in the casting of a particular character (I’ll leave you to determine which), as a whole this is a beautiful and overwhelmingly triumphant adaptation of an enduring classic. Brava! Bravissima!!

This was the final movie of 2023 for me, and a great way to close it out. I have not watched the original or the Broadway play, so I cannot compare it to those. I did not know what to expect going in, but I found the beginning and ending of the movie to be suffused with pathos. The middle kind of drags a bit and could have been shorter, and outside of 1-2 songs, I did not care much for the music. But the production and costume designs were lavish, and the acting was heartfelt. The themes are strong, which makes sense for something with so many adaptations already. It’s not necessarily one of the best movies of the year, but it’s in the second batch.

The Color Purple (2023) carries profound cultural and religious significance, delivering one of the most Jesus-centered messages I've encountered in cinema. It features absolutely stunning vocal performances that truly captivates. The creative staging and choreography elevate the storytelling, drawing audiences in both visually and emotionally.
