Lt. Col. Robert "Dutch" Holland (James Stewart), ehemaliger Air-Force-Pilot im zweiten Weltkrieg wird zu Friedenszeiten für weitere 21 Monate zum Dienst verpflichtet, wodurch er seine Baseballkarriere nicht fortführen kann. Die Vereinigten Staaten brauchen Piloten für strategische Kampfziele (und damit Nuklearwaffen), weswegen Dutch wieder eingezogen wird, unter der Leitung von General Hawkes (Ray Lovejoy). Dutch ist frisch mit Sally (June Allyson) verheiratet, die zwar darunter leidet, dass er so selten daheim ist, aber sich mit seiner Militärlaufbahn einverstanden erklärt, sogar als die Pflichtzeit ausläuft.
